Asperger’s syndrome – encouraging social skills

Social skills as the basis
for mutual problem-solving”

Karin Reichwein

The pressures we are under today are increasing as a result of newly generated knowledge and the insights provided by academic research and practical experience. In addition, digitization is increasing the pressure of time and the demands on every kind of activity. With increased output comes an ongoing increase in the risk of errors. We are forced to become masters at problem solving. People display different personality traits depending on their individual make-up, including different skills, problem-solving strategies, social skills and empathy. By contrast, people with the characteristics of Asperger’s Syndrome are different in that their social behaviour and communication is less pronounced or less apparent in their interaction with others. The question of the extent to which today’s society supports a preference for exhibiting behaviour of this kind in everyday life and at work is an interesting topic of research. The pressure of work, increasing competition, constantly being compared against one another, competitive moments – none of these are factors designed to encourage collaborative behaviour. Nevertheless, cooperation is going to be increasingly important for solving problems on an interdisciplinary basis, and it will be necessary to improve social skills if the best problem-solving strategies are to be found. People with Asperger’s Syndrome can, if the will is there, learn to change their social behaviour not just because of what is socially desirable but also because they learn that cooperating with other people to solve problems generates value. Children suffering from the characteristics of Asperger’s can be helped very successfully with the appropriate measures.
